Hello, welcome, and thanks for dropping by! This is the personal blog of Brent Phillips.
As a brief commentary – I’ve always been fascinated by the technology that makes up the digital infrastructure around us (think internet, mobility) and how they are fundamentally changing the way we interact with one another. In particular, I spend a lot of time thinking about the impact of our interactions with, and through, such systems (the synapse between “think + act” and “infrastructure + software”) and the experiences that these interactions create for us. More on that later…but for now…
10 mostly tech-related things about me…
- My first computer was an Atari 800, followed a few years after by one of the earliest Macintosh Computers (256K, BW).
- I learned to code early in life by modding BASIC on some of the the Atari games.
- I programmed ”Celestial Adventures” (an interactive learning game) in 8th grade with a couple of buddies on an Apple IIe (also played a ton of Karateka). The project stemmed from a statewide competition among science teachers to develop a new learning experience for middle-schoolers. We won an honorable mention from the Dept. of Physics at North Carolina State University.
- I still code. Mostly PHP, C# (Silverlight), Flash/Actionscript, HTML, XML, Javascript, and AJAX.
- I have worked as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer and have co-owned a web marketing firm.
- I play guitar recreationally and have played bass in a band. I currently own a Takamine acoustic/electric, and a Schecter electric. I play both through a small Crate amp with a Zoom digital effects pedal.
- I speak French but not often.
- I’m a native of Raleigh, NC, have lived in Savannah, GA; Woodinville, WA; and now, just north of Atlanta, in Acworth, GA.
- Other interests include crossfit (death by exercise, not kidding) and taekwondo(see crossfit note) which I’ve taken up with my kids. I enjoy a wide range of music, reading (mostly social, economic, technology, and marketing), and never seems to watch enough movies – especially science fiction.
- …And last, but not least, I’m married and have three awesome kids (9, 8, and 6).
