rediscovering great music

The musician was phenomenal this afternoon. One guy was playing a double neck guitar / bass combo with a looping phrase sampler and drum machine. I’ll digress for a moment becuse this is pretty cool – If you don’t know, the sampler allows a musician to record (capture) parts of a song (rhythm guitar, backing vocals, other riffs) in real-time, then call them up and accompany them at other times during the same song. For example, he records the rhythm track then plays a solo over it or sings a chorus then sings a harmony to the first and so on. At any rate, this gave him a lot of flexibility over what he played and, most importantly, how it sounded to us. To the point of my post – he knew his chops and landed some phenomenal covers of some great, great – and in some cases – rather obscure - material…all of which I’m now pulling down to my new Zune. Uncle Kracker, Hootie and the Blowfish, Freddy King, The Ventures, Van Morrison, and  – an all time fave – a few tracks from Paul Simon’s Graceland. Great stuff! If interested, check them out – the links take you over to Bing Songs.

We’ve had a phenomenal weekend on the coast and will be heading back tomorrow after a few last hours of fun at the pool / beach (within yards of one another) tomorrow morning.  Per usual, we overpacked and anticipated many more activities than we actually took on – this time around in fact, we stayed poolside all day, both days. Hard to leave a good thing. In fact, a number of families from our area (neighborhood, soccer team, school) ended up down here coincidentally which added to the fun.   To paint a picture…80+ degrees, poolside food and beverage service, the beach within yards, and live music all day.  In this part of the country, you don’t expect much less. Its going to be hard to leave…

Only one surprise worth mentioning…if you know the movie Caddyshack, you might be able to guess: http://youtu.be/1PmMFaVzbzc
